信奉者側の見解

　信奉者側の解釈は、ルイ17世の死（エリカ・チータム）、フランス革命期の反革命運動（ジョン・ホーグ）、1940年の第三共和制崩壊（セルジュ・ユタン）など、論者によってまちまちで有力視されている説が見当たらない。

同時代的な視点

　ピーター・ラメジャラーは、この情景が『ミラビリス・リベル』から借用されたものである可能性を指摘している(*1)。エドガール・ルロワは、グラヌム（未作成）の死者記念塔に残る彫像に触発された詩の可能性を示している(*2)。
