英語のことわざ。

元は英国の詩人・劇作家・批評家である「ジョン・ドライデン(John Dryden)」の、『アレクサンダーの饗宴(Alexander's Feast)』の一節。
『アレクサンダーの饗宴』はアレクサンダー大王(Alexander the Great)がペルシャの王ダレイオス3世(Darius)を破った時に開かれた饗宴を歌った詩。
